Getting to Know You --
FOL Volunteer Spotlight

L. J. Curl

Position: FOL Volunteer
Background: This seems a bit early in life to be doing a biography – I just finished sixth grade. But I have been down at the FOL since I was shorter than the tables, chatting peoples’ ears off, since my parents and I moved to Gainesville in 2000. We lived in the Chicago suburbs and, when my dad retired, we moved to Florida. Mom joined the FOL to meet new people, and also because she liked books. Pretty soon she dragged me down there. I didn’t mind; I liked books, too. The first job I remember doing was testing to see if the sound books worked. I only got about one book done a minute, if things were going well. Mostly I enjoyed talking to all the wonderful people. After I started kindergarten at Oak Hall, I didn’t come down except in the summer, or on days that school wasn’t in session. When I did come down, I started doing more “advanced” things, such as putting

dots on books. Our house always has a continual stream of odds and ends flowing through it from the Book House. It isn’t just books, either. I have always been a keeper of useless junk, so the FOL just provided me a source of it, while taking the stuff off their hands. I also became the best dumpster diver at the FOL. Best of all, I found it fun.

I am now in Lyceum, the magnet program at Lincoln Middle School. School is harder, so I can’t come down as much, but I help from home editing columns, creating signs, and grading comic books. I also do things like piano recitals, chess tournaments, and math competitions. During the Sales, I have at least one shift as an adder, and I help people restock tables. The FOL has been a part of my life for nine years, and I am looking forward to many more.
